FotoInsight Launches Reusable Photo Tote Bag
Cambridge, UK. 30 May 2006. – Encouraging customers to use fewer environmentally unfriendly plastic bags has long been a challenge. The UK's largest supermarket chain said this month that it would seek to cut the number of shopping bags it gives to customers by 25% over the next two years. Much more could be achieved by getting people to use their own, durable carrier bags.

Do carrier bags matter?
Every year, an estimated 17.5 billion plastic carrier bags are given away by supermarkets, an average of 290 bags for every person in the UK (Waste Watch). According to “Recycle Now” 80% of shoppers put everything into free carrier bags at the supermarket, using them usually only once. This results in 100,000 tonnes of plastic bags being thrown away – equivalent to the weight of 70,000 mid size cars. Reusable carrier bags are a small contribution, but they certainly help the environment.
According to FotoInsight, photographic gift items are an increasingly important part of its online service. The FotoInsight management expects the canvas print tote bag to prove popular not only in light of the recent discussions about global warming, CO2 emissions and land fill but also as a smart, sub £8 /€12 gift idea.
Extension of the photo gift range
"In 2006, we expect that photo gifts, photo books and calendars will account for 75% of FotoInsight’s revenue" states FotoInsight Ltd Managing Director Klaas Brumann and continues: “Photo tote bags are long lasting and environmentally friendly. FotoInsight offers a large range of photo gifts like mugs, picture pairs, puzzles etc and plans to further expand its range of long lasting, smart gift ideas in superior quality.”

FotoInsight is Preparing FIFA Photo Book for Germany
Cambridge, UK. 26 April 2006. – This summer will see millions of people worldwide re-arrange their daily routines and work life to squeeze in as much footie as possible! In time for the football world cup Cambridge based FotoInsight is going to launch through its German service an innovative range of CEWE photo books with a FIFA license displaying up to 312 images through its online photo print service. From Cambridge Managing Director Klaas Brumann comments: “Pictures of matches, holidays and parties are fading away in shoeboxes and increasingly on hard drives of aging computers. FotoInsight’s mission is to prevent photographic memories from fading. A printed album, like the upcoming FIFA photobooks, helps to preserve all the memories of a great world cup in order, crisp colours and accessible.
The simplest method of getting a photo album with digital images is printing it. Since late 2005 FotoInsight offers digital camera users a personal photo book from their digital photographs. The personal photo book can be laid with FotoInsight's photo book software in the comfort of the own home.
Volume of photos taken more than tripled
While consumers took an average of 150 photos per year when using analogue cameras, digital camera users are releasing the shutter more than three times as often as the conventional amateur photographer, taking about 470 photos on average. According to FotoInsight, most digital photographers view and select their photos on a home computer. All those digital photos languishing on hard drives could finally see the light of day with the time-saving innovation. The digital photo service FotoInsight states to deliver to 21 European countries within one week of ordering online. Getting luxurious, hardbound, coffee-table style photo books is easy and set to become the latest must-have innovation in photo albums. Once the user has arrived at FotoInsight’s website and has clicked on the photo book icon displayed along side attractive photo calendars, a window appears in the familiar file tree style with text and animated illustrations explaining the upload. The user selects pictures selected through drag and drop directly from the computer. The order of the pictures can be changed after the upload through a range of interactive photo book editing tools. The cost of £19.99 / €27.99 per printed photo book (plus p&p) also includes the option to use online storage for photo sharing in FotoInsight’s online photo album facility one month free.

Can online photo sharing be free?
“A former employee has accused Eastman Kodak Co. of illegally tampering with the quality of customers' digital photos and making false advertising claims, according to a statement issued Wednesday (29 March 2006) by the former employee's attorney” reports DylanMcGrath, business editor at AP. A competing online photo printing service, FotoInsight of Cambridge, UK distances itself from unlimited, free online photo hosting. FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann states: “Providing quality prints for a few cents or pence does not combine with unlimited online storage of multi megabyte image files. FotoInsight only offers uncompressed, printing quality online archiving. We have always stated that this can only be maintained with an honest time limit.”
According to FotoInsight, providing unlimited online photo sharing at print quality is unsustainable with ever larger digital camera image files. FotoInsight provides an online archive option with print orders only, limited to one month, after which users may pay for an extension. Klaas Brumann comments: “Not everything on the internet can be free. There are plenty of sites specializing in online photo sharing, which is a feasible service as long as there is a tap on the size. Ofoto's (Kodak) business idea to use print quality photo files for unlimited hosting is wrong”.
According to FotoInsight, providing photo sharing with free basic features is feasible if financed through the sale of add-on premium services or advertising, as long as the image files remain small. Such online photo sharing sites follow a very different business model from photo printing services like FotoInsight, which specialise in real photographic paper prints and photo gifts requiring print resolution jpegs. “FotoInsight has never understood how Ofoto could accept unlimited storage and online access of multi megabyte jpegs for unlimited time. With Kodak acquiring Ofoto they will have to deal with the accusation by their former director of engineering Maya Raber, to have planned to “irreversibly damage photos”.” FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann comments from Cambridge: “FotoInsight is proud to facilitate the sharing of photographic memories with a printed photo book or online, across geographic boundaries. Our services endeavour to provide long term quality solutions.”

Postcards from Heaven with Google Earth
Cambridge. 20 February 2006. - The virtual earth simulation software “Google Earth” has become hugely popular amongst internet users across the world. The free application incorporates maps, driving directions, and satellite images. It allows users to zoom and pan over three-dimensional images of cities and landscapes, drilling down from space to overhead details.
With a few steps and tricks it is even possible to produce personalised aerial postcards of a street or neighbourhood without the costs that used to be associated with aerial photography. Google Earth works on Windows 2000, XP, or Mac OS X (10.4) and can be downloaded for free from http://earth.google.com/. Once installed it is easy to navigate to an addresses in the UK using a post code or place name. The aerial image displayed can be rotated and tilted for the best view, which can be saved as a jpeg. The application allows tagging places and buildings, e-mailing images or creating so called place marks, which work like a link which can be shared with other Google Earth users. Another convenient way to extract image data from Google Earth, is using one of the many screen shot applications available for free on the net. One such application is greenstreet SnapShot. Greenstreet software Limited, a 20 year old British developer of graphic software applications and their screen shot tools SnapShot can be downloaded for free from Electric Software, a site which promotes software offers, including several greenstreet applications and games.
The Google Earth Licence limits the use of the image data, but states: “You can personally use an image from the application as long as you preserve the copyrights and attributions including the Google logo attribution. However, you cannot sell these to others, provide them as part of a service, or use them in a commercial product such as a book or TV show without first getting a rights clearance from Google.” The image data, though constantly improving (a new update was released in January), is still patchy in places, but from other areas images can be extracted, which are sufficiently clear to print satisfying aerial postcards of a street or neighbourhood. Google Earth images do not produce the crispest of prints, but are unique and a great surprise and joy for friends, a gift for a housewarming party or suitable image for an invitation card.
Once a suitable jpeg has been cropped and scaled to the size desired and it has been interpolated and saved this can be printed on an inkjet printer or through one of the online photo processing services like FotoInsight.com. FotoInsight claims that professional photo processing achieves a higher perceived resolution through the use of a larger number of colours and uses longer lasting inks.
Personalised postcards and greeting cards from satellite images are a welcome change to the Birthday, Anniversary-, Mother’s Day, Season Greetings or Valentines Cards routine. FotoInsight photo postcards have a print area of 14 x 10 cm and the ideal resolution would be 866 x 615 pixel. Folding greetings cards have a print area of 13 x 9 cm where the ideal resolution would be a 799 x 556 pixel digital image file. For all printed cards the image jpegs should ideally exceed 100 kb in size. Once the photograph has been uploaded to http://fotoinsight.ie/ or http://fotoinsight.co.uk the online photo service provides text tools ideal to insert a postcode, name or address details into the aerial photograph. FotoInsight’s print products, like postcards, greetings cards, photo books and photo calendars are printed in high resolution using the long lasting indigo print process. The cards come in sets of ten cards per order and are delivered by mail in the Ireland, the UK and Europe. These images can equally be applied on shirts, mugs, mouse pads and other personalised photo gifts.
FotoInsight of Cambridge provides photo processing and a range of gift items to consumers and businesses in the UK, Ireland and Europe through its website since November 2003. FotoInsight caters for all major operating systems, including Macintosh as well as for the main browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox and Netscape with upload facilities which do not require additional software. From Cambridge Brumann comments: “Digital photos are an ideal starting point for personalised gifts. FotoInsight thrives to constantly provide new products and ideas to get more out of your digital images.” In addition, FotoInsight also provides a free e-Card service, where professional and own photographs can be send as an online greetings card.
