Selected Christmas Gift Ideas – Which are Truly Unique
Christmas
has become the feast of the gift trinity: Give, Take, Return
When
during Advent the smell of cinnamon cookies reaches our nose, it
becomes clear that it is time to think about Christmas presents.
Giving is a way of expressing love, compassion and appreciation.
Giving also makes a statement like "I love you" or
"I am thinking of you".
Give
time instead of money
"To
find a good gift
idea,"
says the sociologist Dr. Holger Schwaiger (Erlangen and Aberdeen),
"you
have to empathise with the other, and to feel their feelings and
needs by constantly fine-tuning your understanding of the other’s
personality. To perceive these signals, you usually have a full
year’s time. If you do, you can forgo the lazy option of giving
money."
The style consultant Ann Green adds, "with
a well-chosen gift, the recipient won’t think about the price.
"
Cash
makes a bad present
“When
we buy gifts, we remove the price tag, to make it clear, that
friendship has no price. Gifts of money are the opposite,” so
the sociologist Schwaiger, because “they
give the
social relationship an economic value.”
 |
Photo Calendars are a popular gift at Christmas |
Celebrate
common experiences
If
you have spent time with a person, you may want to preserve the
memories of common experiences in a photo gift. With pictures of
celebrations, holidays and other special events, you can make
beautiful, personal photo books, photo calendars or Advent
calendars
- ideal gift ideas to celebrate the most cherished moments of the
year.
If
you have at least twelve images that you want to show throughout the
course of a year, a wall calendar is a great option and can be
created easily in just a few steps. You will find more hints &
tips in the article Create
a wall calendar.
For
Advent, there are photo Advent calendars with own pictures and
optionally filled with chocolate from Ferrero® or kinder® or
"filled"
– sugar free – with 24 pictures. In addition, some online
services print "craft
photo advent calendars for self-filling"
with your individual image.
If
you have more pictures - for example of a joint trip - it’s a good
starting point to create a holiday photo
album,
to give as a present. The article "My
holiday photo album - how to start?"
provides practical tips and examples to help your photo book project
succeed and to bring joy for many years to come.
A
photo gift is the opposite of a money gift.
Well
achieved pictures deserve a special place at home, for example as a
large format print. Such enlargements work particularly well as a
photo canvas print, a gallery poster or a multi-panel. The CEWE®
photo poster
and wall-art range expanded again this year, with the addition of the
innovative Hexxas® system. Hexxas®
are hexagonal photo tiles (18 x 15.6 cm or 27 x 23.4 cm in size) that
can be arranged flexibly due to their magnetic suspension system.
Real
gifts to unwrap, touch and see
Professionally
managed web shops from A like Amazon®
through F like FotoInsight®
to Z like Zara®
offer - at a supplement - a gift wrapping service. This ensures that
the unwrapping helps to create a positive surprise. Only things that
can be touched and felt are real presents!
Instagram
at your fingertips: Art Prints "Square"
The
Instagram-friendly trend of the year are square prints, bringing the
colourful world of digitally recorded experiences into your home.
They can be enhanced with frames and effects. As a box set, the
square prints (with a 5 inch side length) are a great gift idea.
Art
Prints "Retro" - reminding former Polaroids®
Retro
prints are sets of quality prints on solid 300 g/m² paper in size
5”x4” (10.2 x 12.7 cm). Retro prints can be edited and decorated
with frames and filters. In keeping with the vintage style of former
Polaroids®,
the print area is 9x9 cm (3 ½” square) in size and has a
high-quality layer-effect vanish. As a set of 16, 24 or 32 prints in
a pretty storage box, the Retro prints make a joyful surprise.
Your
own picture as a fine art print
Decorative
prints from own photographs make a very personal present. In its Art
Prints range, FotoInsight offers high-quality prints on matt fine art
paper in the sizes 13x18, 20x20 and 20x30 cm (approx. A4), starting
from just £5.
A
picture pairs game with your own pictures: the Photo Memo®
Cinnamon,
the Christmas spice
As
mentioned earlier, the aroma of cinnamon is part of the Christmas
season, just like the Christmas tree, candle light and gifts.
Cinnamon
invigorates the senses and stimulates our well-being, especially
during the dark winter days. Cinnamon has a positive effect on the
blood sugar level and can help to reduce belly fat and obesity. Since
most households do not own a cinnamon grater, cinnamon is sold mostly
in powder form. When ground, the Cinnamon
cassia
quickly loses many of its essential oils, its stimulating effect and
part of its aroma. Maybe Christmas
is a good opportunity to give a special cinnamon grater, so cinnamon
can always be freshly grated to match the quality of rolled Ceylon
cinnamon sticks. Cinnamon
graters
are available from Cinnamon
Hill
as a grater starter set, which includes one rod of Saigon and Ceylon
cinnamon each from just £25 or €30. For more information on Cinnamon graters: https://iitm.be/CinnamonGrater

When
well-being and friendship come to the fore, the expectations for
gifts change. A list of Christmas gift ideas from various online
providers are published in the article "Christmas
gift? practical, useful and personal"
by the style consultant Ann Green.

Facebook App for Photo Book Print Launched
That’s where consumers want it, says Ecce Terram
Atlanta, GA / Oldenburg, Germany (12/14/2011). Ecce Terram, a globally active digital imaging solutions company with headquarters in Atlanta, GA and Oldenburg, Germany, has launched a new
photo book app for Facebook. The white-label application enables members of the social network to create and order photo books from their favorite photo services provider, which are generated directly from a Facebook photo album.
According to photo industry surveys, most of the more than 800 million Facebook members use the social network to store and share digital photos with family members, friends and co-workers, using the platform’s “Photo Album” feature. The custom brandable app developed by Ecce Terram now clears the way for large retailers and photo services to generate new photo book orders from a so far underdeveloped source.
“
Facebook has become the premier destination for consumers to share and store their photo memories,” says Frank Simon, president and CEO of Ecce Terram USA. “
For retail chains and photo processing services, the white-label version of our photo book app for Facebook could well be the key to unlock the huge potential of this market.”
The new app is backed by Ecce Terram’s long-standing experience with large-scale software deployments for the photo industry. Order processing is handled by Ecce Terram’s
Photo2Lab CentralHub middleware. The software facilitates complete solutions from photo ordering to processing in commercial labs, and also supports standard software installations, as well as customized for large photo processing centers.
Ecce Terram positions its photo book app for Facebook as a logical addition to the company’s order channel solutions for desktop, online, mobile and kiosk platforms. For large retail chains with the Photo2Lab infrastructure already in place, configuration and deployment of the new app to work with their existing order processing system can be completed within a matter of days.
“
Time-to-market for new photo products and services is a major reason why large retailers have come to rely on Photo2Lab solutions provided by Ecce Terram,” says Jay Hitchens, Project Manager at ECCE TERRAM.
The German version of the photo book app for Facebook has already been successfully stress-tested during the strong start phase of Germany’s holiday shopping season on
https://app.share-your-photostory.de/en/, which is bustling this year.
“
The Photo2Lab enables our customers to connect with consumers literally anywhere, anytime they are ready to order photo products and services. Starting immediately, through the photobook app, that includes connecting with them during their ‘quality time’ on Facebook. That's when they appreciate offers the most which help strengthen their bonds with family and friends,” says Ecce Terram's president/CEO.
Facebook members who install the white-label version can then simply select an
album on their Facebook page, choose a background color and pick an image frame. Once they have chosen the pictures to include, added short text comments (optional), defined the sort order and determined the cover photo, they can order the
photo book to be shipped - all from within Facebook.
“
By offering the new Ecce Terram photo book app, a customer can now enable consumers to create thoughtful, elegant photo book gifts, when and where it’s most convenient for them - on Facebook,” says Frank Simon. “
For consumers, it allows them to free their photos from the fleeting digital domain, and create lasting gifts. For Ecce Terram customers, we expect it to significantly increase order volumes.”

About Photo2lab
The Photo2Lab Software Suite offers a complete solution from photo ordering to processing in commercial labs. It includes software applications for Windows, Mac, and Linux, web components, and modules for CD processing or mobile platforms, like iOS and Android devices. The modern connection protocol TRON is freely available and is supported by a variety of third parties. These provide solutions for, among other things, set-top boxes or kiosk terminals. Along with order processing, aspects such as payment, promotion, and adaptation options for affiliates and partners are taken into consideration as part of a white brand solution. The products can be used to handle anything from photo prints to hardcover photo books, thus offering unique flexibility and openness with the goal of enabling solution customers to reduce costs and reach new target audiences.
In 2010, Photo2Lab installations handled orders with over 220 million digital photos, 500,000 photo albums and photo calendars.

FotoInsight announces new "Designer v.4.6" Photo Book Software at Photokina.
Every other year in September representatives from the world of photography come together at Photokina in Cologne, for the world's most important photographic fair. The leading players in the imaging industry's fastest growing segment - photo books - are getting ready to showcase their latest developments. FotoInsight announces a major upgrade to its "Designer" software for CEWE PHOTO BOOKS.
Cologne, 21/09/2010. - To provide space where the favourite photographs can shine, photo book services like FotoInsight are constantly improving their software and their range. The latest FotoInsight Designer software upgrade incorporates many suggestions from a SirValuse Usability study and features apart from an enhanced navigation many new tools.
Automatic photo book size conversion
Until recently, when designing a
CEWE PHOTO BOOK, it could only be ordered in the same size. The new FotoInsight Designer can now convert CEWE PHOTO BOOK layouts from one size into another of the same shape. For example, from a square Photo Book XL in size 12" x 12" (30 x 30 cm), users can now get a smaller square size 8" x 8" (20 x 20 cm) or a larger square size 16" x 16" (40 x 40 cm), adjusted automatically based on the original layout. The same can be done to photo books in portrait or panorama format.
The photo book editor in the new FotoInsight Designer software upgrade now saves (caches) changes automatically, so that progress made can't get lost during the design process. That is important, as
photo books are getting ever larger and bigger. The upgrade features the large CEWE PHOTO BOOK XXL Panorama (42 x 30 cm) with a padded cover in real leather. For a stronger bind the large panorama pages are specially folded into the cover bind.
Editing Assistant now recognizes human faces
The software upgrade will be shown at Photokina and will be launched as a free download from October 2010. Its Layout Assistant has been improved and can now recognise faces. That way the automatic layout assistant can now avoid covering faces on photographs. Users will also be able to create custom CEWE PHOTO BOOK Layout-Styles, for the Assistant to use when creating automatic photo book layouts.
New photographic calendars, new features
For demanding photographers wanting to create large calendars FotoInsight is now adding the size
A3 photo calendar also in panorama format. Photo calendars on real photographic paper can also be designed in FotoInsight Designer v.4.6. Real photographic paper developed in a professional photo lab guarantees brilliant colours and superior durability.
The colour schemes of the application's calendar templates received a make-over and the application can now also display bank holidays in photo calendars.
More photo gifts
The
software upgrade also features the option to choose the pages in spiral-bound
photo cover note pads (A5 and A4) with the option of lined or graph paper. In general FotoInsight is increasing the user's choice. For example it is now possible to give each greeting card in a set of greeting cards an individual design.
The Managing Director of FotoInsight Klaas Brumann comments: "
The new photo calendars on photographic paper and the new CEWE PHOTO BOOK XXL Panorama provide an impressive environment to preserve the favourite pictures from holidays and events in shiny quality. Books can be accessed at any time. Unlike videos and images on digital media there will never be compatibility problems with future digital standards. With your FotoInsight Photo Book simply turn the pages and enjoy, now and in a hundred years."

Three Rules for Outstanding Presents
A guide to the right gift idea for Mother's Day
Trying to think from the recipients position is a good start when choosing a present. Who do we know better than our mother? Nevertheless, finding a unique present that expresses the respect and attention held is not easy, but some basic rules will help. Could Mother have easily purchased the item herself? If she could but hasn't, is it something she would want or would appreciate? How much effort has been put into the present? Generally, present with a strong personal component or input stand out and are valued more as the receiver appreciates the effort and attention. Everyone can buy a coffee table book about Spain, but making a
photo book about the last family holiday is different and very personal. Usually pictures can make the difference between generic merchandise and a unique mother's day gift.
The pleasure of picking something special
Indulging into the pleasures of picking something special requires some time to investigate ideas. Photo processing services offer a wide range of personalised gift items from calendars, canvases, crystal hearts to photo books and hand bags - all with your own photographs professionally applied.
First in imagination
Presents require using imagination and creativity. Combining text and images can convert the useful into a unique expression of creativity and attention to Mom.
In Memoriam - CANVAS3 -30%

• A holiday or family
photo as a canvas print? FotoInsight prints digital images onto canvas, stretched and mounted onto a wooden frame. Delivered ready to hang onto the wall and from now to the end of March with 30% discount (voucher code "ART3"). Sizes range from about A4 / 12”x8” (from £24.99 plus p&p) and can be as large as 32”x24”.
• Active families who want to remember their holidays will find the
photobook printed from your personal digital photographs ideal. With a variety of creative themes and page layouts, these one-of-a-kind photo gifts will help to remember a special trip or
photos from every-day moments the family has shared together. For Mother's day (and to the end of March) Printing-1 offers £15 off its
photo book printing on orders over £35.
• A calendar from Mother’s Day to Mother’s Day? FotoInsight
photographic calendars can start any month of the year. A hanging wall calendar or a photo book calendar offer room to jot down birthdays and family events. Photo calendars can be printed through a professional photo lab or can be made with
calendar design software at home. The
photo calendar test compares three different solutions helps to find the most convenient option:
• Popular gifts for Mother's day photo gift classics include the a pillow case or hand or linen bag with photo on print.
• Laser engraved crystal photo gifts, including crystal picture frames, crystal key rings with LED light, crystal pen holders and crystal photo hearts. The photo crystal items are a sophisticated photo gift for Mother's Day.
This year, it’s not what you give but what the gift yields that counts. Good memories and positive emotions are the best return.
Summary
To find the right present requires to:
- think from the person's position who is receiving the gift
- know the person well
- invest in the personal effort to make a unique, memorable gift

Christmas presents with a personal touch
Should a Christmas present be practical, useful or personal? The search for the perfect gift idea continues.

Berlin, London, Cambridge. 6 Nov. 2009. Finding the right Christmas present for your friends and family is a challenge you have to face every year. When a few basic rules are observed, finding original and affordable presents can become quite easy. Last minute purchases should be avoided, it only causes stress at the wrong time of the year.
Christmas, celebrating reunions
Searching for and buying Christmas presents can be completely relaxed when done from home on the Internet. Questions like: "What would she like or what would be useful to him?" or "Does it have to be that expensive?" have become redundant in our affluent society, where people have already bought the things they want and what they have not bought yet they don't really want. For this Christmas here a list of individual gift ideas to preserve personal memories and to celebrate families and friendship. These are largely photo gifts, personalised with own images.
Greeting cards don't have to come a of the shelf
Greeting cards with their own interesting or funny pictures are much more personal. Photo services like FotoInsight print
photo greeting cards usually in sets of ten as picture postcards or folding greeting cards (with image and text on-print on all four pages) with their envelopes . Hint: The cheapest photo greeting cards are on photographic paper, where the front can be edited in full colour, costing only £3.99 including 10 envelopes.
Calendars with own photographs
There can hardly be a better Christmas present than a
photo calendar, let it be a wall calendar, a desk planner, a table picture calendar or kitchen calendar, it needs a new one every year. The FotoInsight Designer software provides many calendar templates for
photo calendars in different sizes. Similar to the
photo book layouts, a virtually unlimited number of pictures can be applied and layered. A birthday calendar can include passport size pictures on birthdays in the calendars.
Family stories in pictures
With pictures from a family or holiday there will be a story to tell. The ideal medium to preserve these memories is a photo book, printed with personal photographs. The holiday season is the time to share these memories with the whole family. Another photobook service, Printing-1 launches a new photo book style just in time for the season. In this new
glossy photo book each page is sealed with a glossy, environmentally friendly vanish. With the glossy finish the photo book should be protected from all the finger prints friends and family will leave on the pictures as the photo book is passed around.
Home decoration
Some pictures need space; they will look great as a poster or as a laminated and framed deco block. Laminating posters instead of putting them under a glass frame avoids light reflections, but still protects the colour prints from humidity and UV-light so that several generations should be able to enjoy the
poster prints. FotoInsight's Designer software includes a
Collage Poster and Collage Canvas feature, to create a print composed of up to 98 images.
Own photographs printed onto canvas, mounted on a wooden frame
A fine present for those with space on their walls is a
photo canvas print, Especially photographs which were post edited with artistic effects that look great as an art print. 'Think Big!'
photo canvas prints are available in online photo shops in a range of different formats and sizes from 20 x 30 cm to 120 x 120 cm. FotoInsight offers photo canvas prints with the option of a floating Havana frame. With this frame the fold over the edge of the wood frame is visible and the 3D effect of a mounted canvas preserved.
Photo crystalA photo heart glass block with a laser engraved photograph and other photo crystal gift ideas can be found in Fotoinsight's Crystal section. Prices range from £9.99 / €12.99 for a crystal key ring (with LED light) to £19.99 / €29.99 for a laser engraved crystal photo (the engraving process is apparently military technology).
Photo on a coffee mug
Always popular, simple and economical is a
photo mug. As a German beer mug with a a photograph or a panorama print on a coffee mug (with coloured inner side), it only needs one digital image to make a practical present personal.
Cuddly moose with photo
When giving a soft toy with your own photograph, at Christmas it has to be a "photo moose" (with a red cap).
Photo games at ChristmasThe
picture pairs game Remembory is ideal for families, as it suits children from the age of 4 years young and unites families. 25 of your own photos (family, holidays, et al) suffice for an individual gift (£12.99 / €13.99 +p&p), which families can play over the holidays.
Photo puzzles too are popular during long winter nights.
Christmas 2009 - personal values for post consumerism
What could be more personal than a photo gift? What preserves memories in vivid colours? In the digital age the photo gift printing industry seems in tune with modern consumer values.

FotoInsight launches new "FotoInsight Designer v.4" photo book software.
Even Larger Books with own Photographs
The leading players in the imaging industry's fastest growing segment - Photo Books - are getting ready to showcase their latest developments. FotoInsight announces a upgrade to its "Designer" software and new, even larger Photo Books.
To provide space in which the favourite photographs can shine, photo book services like FotoInsight Ltd are constantly improving their software and their range. So far, most books printed with own photographs are limited to less than 100 pages. With the upcoming version 4 of FotoInsight Designer its
photo books can feature up to 130 pages for the first time. After introducing the
XL Photo Books (12"x12" /
30x30 cm) last year the software upgrade will add a new
XXL Photobook format (H12"x16" / H30xW42 cm) in stylish faux leather and with a traditional screw bound. In the new XXL format landscapes can be spread over 80 cm wide double pages. For this, FotoInsight is increasing the print resolution to 360 dpi.
The software upgrade announced for the UK Retail Imaging Show has finally been launched. The clever 'Assistant' in the FotoInsight Designer
photo book software will then be able to design a 130 page extra
large photo book in under three minutes, For this the application automatically lays out the pages with the chosen images and can put these in order of date, file name or event.
When designing a photobook page by page hundreds of templates in the free software help to position images. A "Help Grid" can be turned on in the application's editor window to provide optical guiding in positioning photographs and text. The size of the grid can be changed and the application can make pictures stick to the grid lines. An even finer positioning can be achieved by zooming into the editor.
Any picture can go without, with a standard or an individual frame to set the
photo apart from the background or layered images. Text can be written on any part of any page or it can be copied and pasted from a word processor or other application. This ensures that names and dates can be recorded and the text of for example a
wedding speech can live on for future generations.
Repeat Orders
Once the photo book of a holiday or party arrives everyone is cheering and many want their own copy. With the new release arrives what many regular FotoInsight customers have been asking for: the re-ordering option. During six weeks after an order a
photo book can be re-ordered without having to upload the layout again.
Photobooks ordered by the 16th of December should be delivered in time for
Christmas.
The Managing Director of FotoInsight Klaas Brumann comments: "The larger formats XL and the new XXL provide the space to preserve the favourite pictures from holidays and events in shiny quality. Books can be accessed at any time. Unlike videos and images on digital media there will never be compatibility problems with future digital standards. With your FotoInsight Photobook simply turn the pages and enjoy, now and in a hundred years."

New photo calendar software combines creative freedom and professional print
A new free software tool combines flexible layout design and professional printing processes
A new, free software application makes it surprisingly easy to design photo calendars with own digital photographs benefiting from professional printing and binding processes. Currently there are “Calendar Maker” software applications for photo enthusiasts and consumers, which provide for little money relatively great freedom in the photo calendar design, but lack professional print and binding. On the other end of the spectrum available are photo processing labs which offer professional
photo calendar printing, but usually limit the creative freedom to one image per page in a fixed position. According to the vendor, the new “FotoInsight Designer” software
combines the advantages of both: Creative freedom in the photo calendar design and professionally printed output.

The new version of the photo service utility “FotoInsight Pro” is a Windows software suite, containing apart from a range of tools and applications one to create
photo calendars from own digital images. As already known from the software for "
cewe photobooks" at FotoInsight, the new photo
calendar design tool allows complete freedom in positioning the photographs, which can also be layered on top of each other; text can be added or layered in colour or transparent using any TrueType font. This significantly broadens the scope for creativity when designing calendars from own photographs and there is now virtually no limit on the number of images per page.
"
Quality is our priority. All materials we use are subject to extensive testing and are guaranteed by their manufacturers to last 100 years. This guarantee extends to photo printing on real photographic paper as well as to the photo book and photographic calendar products", emphasises Dr.
Rolf Hollander, CEO of CeWe Color, FotoInsight's production partner and Europe's largest photo finisher.
FotoInsight photo calendars can start any months of the year, resolving the issue about personal presents at birthdays or wedding anniversaries. The new FotoInsight large wall planner (A3 Annual Calendar with own pictures) costs £4.99; 13 page spiral bound calendars start from £9.99 (inc. VAT, plus p&p £2.99/order for delivery in the UK, Ireland and 30 other European countries), the FotoInsight calendar range includes calendars up to A3 size.
With the digital revolution photo labs are increasingly becoming personalised gifts services. The new FotoInsight Pro order software reflects this trend, integrating digital photo management and editing with optimised, safe ordering for
photo prints, poster, gift ideas,
photo canvas, calendar and
printed photo album design in one free of charge
software suite.
The data volume for online orders of high resolution photo
poster, photographic calendars or
large photo books growths faster than the band width of internet connections. Using order software that can communicate with the server at the other end helps to overcome little gaps in the online transmission when uploading large numbers of images. FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann explains the reason for the software development: “
The FotoInsight Pro software client helps making the ordering process safer, easier and faster. That is why we provide this valuable, creative software tool as a free download at:
