Cambridge. 2 August 2012. - When the start of a new school year approaches, the school bag needs filling with new stationery. The online photo printer FotoInsight from Cambridge offers a new service to customize such items. The idea is to personally engage the youngsters with their school supplies, to ensure that they will look after them. In addition, own pictures of a pet, a group of friends or recent holidays keep positive memories alive. An aluminium sports flask is less likely to be kicked in-lieu of a football if it bears a personal picture. The school bag will be treated with due care if the the own image has been printed onto it. FotoInsight now prints digital photographs onto practical items like spiral note pads, notebooks or pencil cases.

In time for the new school year FotoInsight presents a new line of school supplies. Examples of products onto which the online photo service applies customer photographs through the free ordering software FotoInsight Designer include:
- Spiral bound notepad A4 (£6.99 / €8.99)
- Spiral bound notepad A5 (£5.99 / €6.99)
- Note pads with photo hard cover (€8.95)
- School Diary (£16 / €19.99)
- Pencil case with photo lid (£12 / €14.95)
- Sandwich box (£8 / €9.95)
- Aluminium sports bottle (£12.99 / €14.99)
- Kids rucksack (£19.50 / €24.95)
- Messenger Bags (£19.99 / €29.99)

Product Personalisation through Mass Customization
The expression Mass Customization is an oxymoron, joining the opposites "Mass Production" and "Customization", which has lately become fashionable. Mass customisation aims at producing goods and services to individual customer specifications with efficiencies and costs similar to mass production. Some firms in the growing photo gifts market, for example FotoInsight Ltd, apply this strategy, using new technologies and innovative structures to submit mass produced items like sports bottles or time planners to an individualisation process, applying user photographs. To achieve costs and delivery times similar to those of mass produced standard items, the production architecture has to be structured in a way that the individualisation takes place at the rear end of the production chain. These firms acquire mass produced components, which were manufactured benefiting from large economies of scale. As the individualisation can only be applied after an order has been placed, the process is called an "X-to-order" production. The gift items market with its strong seasonal fluctuations towards Christmas and Mother's day requires a particularly flexible production process.

Realising own ideas
"Photo labs that want to survive the fast changing photographic printing market have to produce goods in a way that each customer will find exactly what he or she wants", states FotoInsight's Managing Director Klaas Brumann. A growing number of items ranging from the useful to the decorative undergo customisation by application of customer photographs. Users can turn their own ideas into reality, which are often artistic, aesthetic, funny or personal. Consumers' growing design orientation becomes useful on school supplies. Everyday items like notepads, which are often no longer really valued by many pupils, receive a new personal value when they are individual.

Photographic paper calendars withstanding the magnifying glass test!

Cambridge. 8 Nov. 2011. - The advantages of true photographic paper are evident at first glance: bright colours and very high detail reproduced on considerably stronger paper. As lab processed photographic paper is exposed without printing grids, printing dots will not be found, not even with a magnifying glass. This leads to a more balanced colour reproduction and sharper detail. That way, anyone can create their own photographic calendars in professional print quality with bright colours, even as a one off print.

FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann says about the use of silk matt photographic paper in photo albums and personalised calendars: "If high quality prints are required, you can only achieve a corresponding print through the exposure on real photographic paper. FotoInsight is a quality printer and raises the bar every year."

Britain's largest range of photo calendars

The online photo service FotoInsight has been offering one of the widest ranges of photo calendars for many years, now FotoInsight increases the range with six new calendars on photographic paper.

How to design a photo calendar on photographic paper?

At FotoInsight there are two ways to design a photo calendar. The easiest way to quickly create a personal calendar is directly in the webbrowser on Fotoinsight’s the website. It requires no software to be installed, and there are a large number of formats and calendars to choose from. Users who want more control over the design of the photo calendar or those who would like to create different variants of a calendar layout should use the free FotoInsight Designer application:

  1. Choose a calendar format and size and consider the orientation: Square, portrait or landscape from http://fotoinsight.co.uk/calendars.html
  2. Select the starting month and year.
  3. Choose the calendar page and layout, add images and change backgrounds as preferred. There is no limit to the number of pictures per page and it even allows to create picture collage on calendar pages. A nice personal touch is created by adding additional passport size photos at birthdays and wedding anniversaries.
  4. Upload own photo calendar design.
  5. After logging in choose the payment form and order a calendar print with the option to have it shipped to a separate delivery address, for example as a gift.

The software can be used offline and an Internet connection is not required during the design process. The calendar print file will be compressed to the optimum size before transmission to the print server without sacrificing quality.

Photo Acrylic Prints Growing Popularity

FotoInsight is launching today acrylic poster prints as an additional, high value decorative photo product.

Cambridge. 1/2/2011. - Acrylic-Glass Printing is a trend from the world of advertising and art exhibitions that is coming to offices and living rooms. Acrylic Photo Glass Prints are often described  as "behind glass print". To achieve the highest print resolution, FotoInsight produces the image on real photographic paper and secures it with a special, completely transparent adhesive to a sheet of acrylic glass. FotoInsight’s new acrylic posters do without metal knobs that are needed in less developed acrylic print processes to hold the acrylic glass and print together. As light passes through the side of the acrylic it illuminates the image, giving it additional depth and colour brilliance. This turns digital photographs into highly decorative posters in no time.

The standard of digital cameras has improved considerably. Many have good lenses, high resolution and accurate reproduction of the colours in photographs. Who shoots great pictures wants to print some of them to decorate a home or office. Bright colors, high resolution and depth effect are the ideal components for decorative, large poster prints from digital images. These characteristics are combined in the new acrylic photo prints from FotoInsight. The new acryl print enlargements feature brilliant colours and produce a certain plasticity. The thick acrylic plate adds a great quality impression. Users will welcome the fact that the acrylic photos are easy to clean and long lasting. FotoInsight describes the acrylic material used as "top spec Polymethylmethacrylate with a minimum thickness of 5 mm, which offers a higher scratch resistance than other acrylic products."

FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann talking about the new acrylic print: "Our new posters behind acrylic glass offer greater dimensional stability, UV resistance and durability. Our acrylic posters are not only stronger but also more resilient." The Premium version available from size 40 x 60 cm is 1 cm thick. This gives it more visual depth than other acrylic prints currently on the market.

According to the Marketing Director of FotoInsight the material is characterized by its rigidity and shatter-resistance, eliminating any fraying of the edges and distortion that could otherwise be caused by storage and temperature fluctuations. Sunlight and moist wipes leave the photo prints unaffected. Prints on acrylic glass are particularly suitable for collages and digital pictures with vibrant colours. The acrylic sheet helps to increase the effect of depth in pictures.  The quality processing suits its use in photographic exhibitions and due to its excellent visual appeal, it is used in prestigious art galleries and exhibitions around the world.

Three Rules for Outstanding Presents

A guide to the right gift idea for Mother's Day

Trying to think from the recipients position is a good start when choosing a present. Who do we know better than our mother? Nevertheless, finding a unique present that expresses the respect and attention held is not easy, but some basic rules will help. Could Mother have easily purchased the item herself? If she could but hasn't, is it something she would want or would appreciate? How much effort has been put into the present? Generally, present with a strong personal component or input stand out and are valued more as the receiver appreciates the effort and attention. Everyone can buy a coffee table book about Spain, but making a photo book about the last family holiday is different and very personal. Usually pictures can make the difference between generic merchandise and a unique mother's day gift.

The pleasure of picking something special

Indulging into the pleasures of picking something special requires some time to investigate ideas. Photo processing services offer a wide range of personalised gift items from calendars, canvases, crystal hearts to photo books and hand bags - all with your own photographs professionally applied.

First in imagination
Presents require using imagination and creativity. Combining text and images can convert the useful into a unique expression of creativity and attention to Mom.

• A calendar from Mother’s Day to Mother’s Day? FotoInsight photographic calendars can start any month of the year. A hanging wall calendar or a photo book calendar offer room to jot down birthdays and family events. Photo calendars can be printed through a professional photo lab or can be made with calendar design software at home. The photo calendar test compares three different solutions helps to find the most convenient option:

• Popular gifts for Mother's day photo gift classics include the a pillow case or hand or linen bag with photo on print.

• Laser engraved crystal photo gifts, including crystal picture frames, crystal key rings with LED light, crystal pen holders and crystal photo hearts. The photo crystal items are a sophisticated photo gift for Mother's Day.

This year, it’s not what you give but what the gift yields that counts. Good memories and positive emotions are the best return.

Summary
To find the right present requires to:
- think from the person's position who is receiving the gift
- know the person well
- invest in the personal effort to make a unique, memorable gift

ECCE TERRAM to Showcase Innovative Solutions for Digital Photo Processing Services at PMA in Las Vegas

German specialist developer ECCE TERRAM is celebrating a new mile stone with 132 million photo prints being ordered through its middleware software components. These solutions help to improve photo services' independence and negotiation power and provide access to a range of components to cover varying requirements. At the International Photo Marketing Association Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas it will be showing photo lab and Internet solutions available in Europe, which ECCE TERRAM will launch in New Zealand in April 2008 and in Australia May 2008.

Online photo services converting digital images into traditional photographic paper prints are reaching the volumes of traditional photo labs in the 1990’s. Digital photo processing is a growth industry, but only a few developers have the experience and depth to create complete 'end user to photo lab' software solutions. The specialist Internet software developer ECCE TERRAM will be presenting the latest 'off the shelf', modular software solutions for online photo services, web portals, photo labs and purchasing associations at the international PMA exhibition in Las Vegas in January 2008, including client software and middleware releases currently in preparation.

Photo2Lab

ECCE TERRAM is announcing the launch of its Photo2Lab solutions in New Zealand (April 2008) and Australia (May 2008) with lab partners and dedicated local server in. The ECCE TERRAM Photo2Lab solution is unique in allowing photo services to receive and allocate print orders to their own photo printers, to third party central labs, to photo gift specialists or to channel orders on a case by case basis. Photo processing web solutions from large central labs have been developed for them to create an unbreakable tie between shops or portals and the supplying photo lab. Large central labs are building a dominant position, weakening smaller photo service’s negotiation power. ECCE TERRAM’s Photo2Lab is ready to plug into different photo labs, guaranteeing photo stores and web portals independence from dominant labs. With solutions developed using Web 2.0 technologies like SOAP, WSDL, Ajax etc. ECCE TERRAM offers a diverse range of components for photo portals, including support for ICC Profiles for professional color management demands.

Photo Lab Software Solutions

Together the Photo Lab software processing components build flexible, state-of-the-art solutions. These range from order processing using online stores, point-of-sale terminals and offline software clients for Windows, Macintosh and Linux using an open protocol connecting to any photo lab or printer. The DPS middleware processes the orders using a central user database, which allows splitting orders to cover production requirements (e.g. mixed orders for standard prints, posters and gift items). Lab plug-ins built the third layer in ECCE TERRAM’s ‘Photo2Lab’ solution. The lab plug-ins currently support for example DPL, Allcop, ORWO, CEWE Color, DWM and Frontline. Increasingly specialists from the growing sector of photo book, calendar and gift item printing, like Ifuse, Snapmania are being supported by ECCE TERRAM.

ECCE adds ICC Profiles to its Middleware

At PMA ECCE Terram is adding ICC Profiles to its Middleware as an option for photo labs catering for professional photographers. These solutions allow to indicate image optimization for individual image files and make re-ordering prints easier. In addition, the ECCE Photo Suite offline client will  integrate the HDX4 Photo Manager. It serves to optimise the pictures per mouse click before uploading them to the Internet, in order to bring out the best of the photographs. This is important because large photo labs find it increasingly costly to correct or optimise images in photo albums and calendars. The Managing Director of the developer ECCE TERRAM, Frank Simon states: "Among our customers are ORWO, Farbglanz Imaging, Pixelnet, Focus, TV Spielfilm, Kodak and many more. We are proud that in the past year 132 million image prints have been processed through the installed base of ECCE middleware solutions."

ECCE Photo Suite adds Photo Book and Calendar Editor Modules at PMA

ECCE TERRAM created the new generation of offline photo ordering clients (Windows, MacOS and Linux) with a modular structure. New modules for photo book and calendar design are being released during the PMA Trade Fair. A new postcard module which handles franking and mailing directly to the cards recipient will also be revealed during the PMA. The applications are brandable through graphics, logos and colors and are used by labs and services of different sizes, from large central labs like ORWO and DPL, book and gift printers to mini labs. Catering for European and international business ECCE TERRAM’s applications are easy to localize and are available in several European languages.

ECCE TERRAM practices these values with its solutions shown at PMA Booth No.:   K 191-1 from January 31st to February 2nd, 208.

FotoInsight entices to the photo book experience printing a free booklet for first time users

Printing photo books from own pictures is arguably the fastest growing product in the photo processing industry. In view of the popularity of photo books in the USA and Europe it is surprising that they still live a niche existence in Britain. One of the self proclaimed European leaders in personal photo book printing, the Cambridge company FotoInsight Limited is offering a £5.99 photo booklet print for free to showcase its quality as a trial offer to new customers of the photobook service at FotoInsight (through an £8 voucher the remaining cost including delivery is £1.79).

In the year 2006 over 3 Million individual photo books and photo calendars have been printed by photo labs and printers world wide. Andrew White, Internet Sales Manager at FotoInsight production partner, explains: “We are a little bit behind Germany and France, where photobooks are huge. You only have to show somebody one, though and they immediately want to know how to do it. Therefore this trial will be UK exclusive.” FotoInsight hopes to provide the opportunity to trial its photo book editing software and experience the complete liberty in the positioning and layering of images, transparent texts, and choice of fonts offered by the "cewe photo book printing" software.

A trial with a free printed photo booklet

Managing Director Klaas Brumann explains why FotoInsight is giving away a free photo booklet print: “We detected that one of the greatest barriers to ordering a photo book is that people expect it to be complicated. A common statement in a photo book test is how surprisingly easy it actually is. With the £8 voucher we want to give everyone the opportunity to test the software and printing quality.” In comparison, a photo book is cheaper than photo prints. Conveniently, it is the time of the year, where such a trial print may serve as a very personal Father’s Day photo gift.

In time for Father’s Day

Photo gifts for Father’s Day are left late and less is being spent than on Mother’s Day. With Father’s spending a growing amount of time with their children this may change. To express appreciation for all Dad has to offer it is good to ask him what he was like growing up and what made him who he is today; asking him about his work — his expertise can be unexpectedly valuable; joining Dad in pursuit of his interests and hobbies. The FotoInsight Managing Director and father of two, Klaas Brumann states: “If photographs of great father-child-events like a ball game, building a tool shed, or an adventure holiday are available, those moments are worth to be immortalised in a printed photo album or booklet. A Printed Photo Book as Never Seen Before

Free software from FotoInsight helps to create coffee table style photo books with fully editable covers. Without any prior experience, beginners can present and preserve their own digital photographs in individual, carefully crafted, glossy photo books.

Cambridge, UK. 22 November 2006. – The personal, coffee table photo book is rapidly developing into a very popular photo print product and is about to overtake traditional 6”x4” prints as the most common photographic printed output in British households. Rarely has the development of a consumer product progressed as quickly. FotoInsight of Cambridge, UK launched photo books from an online facility with limited editing features one year ago. Today the company FotoInsight is introducing a revolution in photo book creation software – a time saving fade-proof record of precious memories for print. It allows novice and inexperienced users to layout their digital images in full colour double page spread, move, crop and edit pictures to any size and add text freely within the photo book, on the cover and on the book spine.

FotoInsight’s Managing Director Klaas Brumann comments: “Our customer’s expectations have been growing rapidly. We have decided to provide photo books only through our software, which we is compact download. Our free software provides a photo book draft within three minutes. To the astonishment of most, it looks just like a professionally laid out coffee table style photo book.” As photo books can be made with up to 98 pages, which can take in excess of 500 images the software also helps to improve the online upload to the photo book production facilities used by FotoInsight. Andy White, Internet Sales Manager at FotoInsight's production partner Standard Photographic Ltd states: "We are extremely proud to launch this exciting new project with FotoInsight in the UK. The photo book is far and above anything else on the market. This is a major step forward for both companies."

In time for Christmas, FotoInsight broadens its photobook range. It now starts with photo booklets (from £5.99) and offers linen cover as well as full colour soft and hardcover options in roughly A4 size or squared, all in all 64 different sizes and shapes are available on FotoInsight (or in Euros from http://fotoinsight.ie). All photo books (square and A4) are available with an editable full picture soft or hard cover or with a linen cover and a very durable channel bind. Channel bind covers use a revolutionary spine forming one of the strongest binds available.

The Photo Book Software

The software for the photo book starts with an easy to use assistant. According to FotoInsight the assistant provides a photo book draft layout within 3 minutes, already with a professional look. This helps to create a printed photo album with hundreds of images quickly. Such layouts can still be fully edited; adding pictures one by one or complete folders, a time saving option. The application provides graphic images for backgrounds; nicer though it seems to use own pictures as a background of a page or a full double page spread.

Instead of using the assistant to create a layout, pages can also be designed individually. This allows rotating and skewing images freely. Any picture can be spread across the page or double page from edge to edge, set on its own or as a background. For example land scape and panorama pictures look great across two A4 pages.

FotoInsight also sets a narrow white line around pictures in the book to set them apart from photographic backgrounds, just as usual in professionally edited coffee table style photobooks. The software provides a useful image editor, to edit individual images. It includes tools to move freely, rotate and label images and to adjust brightness, contrast or saturation. The editor in the software also covers red eye removal and automatic contrast adjustment; plus an undo function. It comes handy that the edited images can be saved as a jpeg.

When saving the photo book project the CeWe Photobook Software presented by Fotoinsight offers a different approach. Instead of embedding the image files into a lay-out file (as would happen with a pdf-file for example) the software creates a subfolder where all images are copied into as jpegs. This has the advantage that each individual photo can be post edited with any digital imaging software. It also allows to batch process these images with other applications.

In the age of the digital camera and camera phones people snap away happily taking lots of pictures to remember their special events. However generally these digital images languish on computer hard drives and the personal memory fades as to who, why, where and what the pictures were about. This is why recently photo albums have seen a revival. FotoInsight have combined the digital age with the growing interest in printed photo albums and taken this to the next step with the CeWe Photo Book – bringing all kinds of new layout tools and making it easier and cheaper to create digital memorybooks with friends and family. According to FotoInsight it doesn’t only print photographs in high quality, but also text is clear, sharp and easy to read. Great for those who like to add ample text to their images.

FotoInsight offers an online photo print service, fully flexible to be used with images from any digital camera. FotoInsight Presents its Unique Picture Pairs Game

Innovative Photographic Picture Pairs game is a real memory jogger – and path to success right at the start of the new school year.

At last FotoInsight’s quality is available in a new group of games designed for the younger set. The online digital photo printing specialist is launching a “Photographic Picture Pairs” game printed from the customer’s photographs. All that is required are 25 digital images (576 x 432 dpi) to make this traditional and original, specially created game.

Any family that has digital photos can create this unique memory jogger. A durable print on quality cards makes the special view from holidays, family photos and the memories of childhood unforgettable. FotoInsight Ltd. Managing Director Klaas Brumann comments: “FotoInsight’s Photographic Picture Pairs are a new dimension in combining own digital images and the ability to create classic games.”

New FotoInsight Picture Pairs game

Match the photos to make-up your pairs. The game promotes the mental development, sorting, mental image rotation, matching and the development of memory skills. Encoding, of novel picture pairs activates the perirhinal cortex (a region of the brain) and is a real memory jogger for all ages. Creating a personal FotoInsight Picture Pairs game from digital camera images is as easy as ordering any other photo prints online. Once the user has arrived at FotoInsight’s photo gift ideas section and has clicked on Print Items, a window appears displaying a range of photo calendars and picture pairs game. The user uploads pictures in JPEG, JPEG-2000, PNG, TIFF, PSD, BMP and GIF through browser boxes or simply uploads a complete, compressed ZIP or RAR folder. An individual FotoInsight Picture Pairs game costs £9.99 plus £2.99 delivery within the UK (or €13.99 plus €4.99 delivery from http://fotoinsight.ie/gift-ideas/toys-and-games/photo-memo.html to Ireland and most European countries).

Why is FotoInsight Picture Pairs such a valuable game?

Creating individual picture pair games from digital images offers much room for creative ideas with holiday snaps, flowers, landscapes and family pictures. A very unique Photographic Picture Pairs game can also be created from 25 familiar faces, like parents, children, grand parents, cousins and friends. According to researchers at the MIT Williams (Williams, A.O., 2001) there is behavioural evidence from infant experiments and studies of prosopagnosia (or face blindness, affecting about 1 in 50 people) providing evidence for innateness of special human face recognition abilities. There seems to exist an anatomically distinct area for quick, holistic recognition of faces. Some scientists suggest that faces might be processed differently than other objects with special difficulties in inverting face images, making a Photographic Picture Pairs game of familiar faces an extremely valuable and unique learning tool.

Convenience and flexibility

FotoInsight offers a PC and Mac compatible, independent online photo service, fully flexible to be used with images from any digital camera. According to FotoInsight’s management the online service offers an extensive array of award-winning photo printing and photo gifts and photo books, poster printing, photo calendars, photo canvas printing, for the consumer, business, photography, and graphic arts markets. From Cambridge, Mr Brumann comments: “Photographic memories must never fade. Our technology is smarter, providing long lasting prints in superior quality.”
